Form 1096 is a transmittal form that the IRS requires when submitting Form 1099-MISC(s) or other information returns.

Although electronic filing can be used to submit information forms to the IRS, transmittal by mail is also allowed with Form 1096. The most common information form is the 1099-MISC that is used to report payment to independent contractors, etc.
