Below are the tax form deadlines for Form W-2 and Form 1099-MISC. You send give Form W-2 to employees. You send Form 1099-MISC to contractors.
The deadline to send Form W-2 is January 31. You must send copies of Form W-2 to employees and the Social Security Administration (SSA). You also need to send Form W-3, the summary form, to the SSA. You can get information about Form W-2 from the IRS, however, you send the form to the SSA.
If you don’t have blank copies for Form W-2, you’ll need to make a run to your office supply store. You can also order blank forms from an authorized distributor. The IRS doesn’t provide “official” copies of this form online, only a sample form.
The deadline for filing 1099-MISC with the IRS is January 31. You will send IRS Form 1099-MISC to independent contractors to whom you paid $600 or more for services rendered. Form 1099-MISC is also due to the IRS by January 31.
Form 1096, the transmittal form, is also due to the IRS by January 31.
