Transit (ABA) Number Definition

Used for direct deposits, a transit (ABA) is a nine-digit number that uniquely identifies your bank. ABA stands for American Bankers Association and identifies a specific federal or state chartered bank or savings institution.

Transit Number Extended Definition

A transit number is a bank’s unique number that allows fund transfers between different banks. Employers who want to pay employees via direct deposit need to know each employee’s transit number. That way, they can route payments to the correct bank.

Employees can find their transit / ABA numbers by looking at the bottom of their checks or calling their bank.
