What is a Debit Block?
A debit block is a security feature offered by banks that stops unauthorized withdrawals from your account through ACH (Automated Clearing House) transactions.
Why do people use a debit block?
- Fraud Prevention: It helps stop scammers or unauthorized companies from pulling money out of your account.
- Control: Businesses often use it to ensure that only approved vendors or payroll providers can debit their accounts.
- Compliance/Security Policies: Some companies set it up as part of internal controls to avoid mistakes or unauthorized payments.
Why is a debit block good for safety?
- Stops Fraud at the Gate: If someone tries to take money without your authorization, the transaction gets blocked before funds leave your account.
- Reduces Risk of Loss: ACH fraud can be difficult to reverse, and debit blocks make it much less likely to happen.
- Whitelist Functionality: Many debit blocks allow you to approve specific companies (by ACH ID) so legitimate payments still go through while everything else is blocked.
Why can a debit block cause a transaction to be declined?
If your bank has a debit block and a company tries to debit your account isn’t on your approved list (even if it’s legitimate, like your payroll provider or another vendor), the bank will reject the transaction.
- Example: If you set up payroll but Patriot Software’s ACH ID isn’t whitelisted, your bank will stop the withdrawal for payroll funding for direct deposit or payroll tax collections.
- The fix is to contact the bank to add the legit company’s ACH ID to your allowed list.
