Although Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Form, is due to expire August 31, 2012, employers should continue to use the current I-9 until further notice, according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The USCIS is working on changing the form, which is required to be completed by both employees and employers to verify the identity and work authorization of new employees.
The USCIS has requested public comment on the proposed changes, which include more instructions and a different layout, optional fields for the employee’s email and phone number, and fields for the foreign passport number and issuing country for certain aliens.
Employers should stay tuned for the coming changes and adopt the new form when it becomes available. Employers can subscribe to I-9 Central for more information.
