Small business owners in Hawaii can depend on

- Employer Registration -- Hawaii employers must register by filing Form GEW-TA-RV-3 at Hawaii.gov.
- Employee Withholding -- Employees should complete the Employee's Withholding Allowance and Status Certificate, HW-4.
- State Tax Unemployment Insurance (SUI) -- Employees should follow Schedule D for their applicable contribution rate. The wage base is $34,200 for 2011, with rates ranging from 1.22% to 5.42%. New employers should use a starting rate of 3.0%. Rates do not include an additional employment and training fund assessment and interest payment assessment of 0.02%.
- State Disability Insurance (SDI) -- The wage base for SDI is $884.29, and the maximum employee withholding is $4.42 for 2011. The SDI rate is 0.50% of wages.
- State Labor Laws -- The current minimum wage in Hawaii is $7.25 per hour (2011).
- Termination Pay -- If an employee is fired, they should receive their termination pay at once or the next day if conditions prevent immediate payment. If an employee quits, they should receive their final payroll check on their next regular payday or immediately if they gave one pay period's notice.
- New Hire Reporting Laws -- Employers must report hiring, rehiring, and employees returning to work within 20 days on Form UC-BP-5(A) (Report of New Hires). Employers can report online or submit this information to:
