D.C. employers can count on Patriot PAY for accurate payroll updates and the latest payroll and labor laws:


  • Withholding Requirements -- D.C. business owners can complete the online Combined Business Tax Registration Form, which combines business registration with employment registration in the District.

    New employees who are D.C. residents must complete Form D-4, Employee Withholding Allowance Certificate.

  • Local Taxes -- There are no local taxes in the District of Columbia.

  • State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) -- The wage base for State Unemployment Insurance is $9,000. For more information, refer to the D.C. Dept. of Employment Services.

  • Labor Laws -- District law states that minimum wage is either $7.00 per hour or the Federal Minimum Wage ($7.25) plus $1.00, whichever is higher. Currently, the D.C. minimum wage is $8.25 (as of 7/20/2011).

    If an employee is fired, the employer must pay termination wages by the next business day. If an employee quits, employers must pay the employee the earlier of the next regular payday or in seven days.

  • New Hire Reporting Law -- D.C. employers must provide to the D.C. New Hire Directory the date that an employee first performed services for pay.
