The EEO-1 Report: Filing Instructions for Employers

If you're a private employer with more than 100 employees or a federal contractor with at least 50 employees, you must file an annual EEO-1 Report with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The 2011 deadline is September 30.

In the EEO-1 Report, also known as the EEO-1 Survey or Employer Information Report, you must report the demographic make-up of your workforce, including gender and race/ethnicity by job class. The reporting period is July through September. You can file this report on the EEOC website.

How to Classify Employees Based on Race/Ethnicity and Job Class

Employees should identify their own race/ethnicity (which can be part of new hire paperwork). If the employee's answer is not available, the EEOC permits you to classify your employees’ race based on “visual observation.”

Here are the different race/ethnicity categories:

    • Hispanic or Latino
    • White (Not Hispanic or Latino)
    • Black or African-American (Not Hispanic or Latino)
    • Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander (Not Hispanic or Latino)
    • Asian (Not Hispanic or Latino)
    • American Indian or Alaska Native (Not Hispanic or Latino)
    • Two or More Races (Not Hispanic or Latino)

For further description of these categories, refer to the EEO-1 instruction booklet.

Here are the different job class categories:

    • Officials and Managers
    • Professionals
    • Technicians
    • Sales Workers
    • Administrative Support Workers
    • Craft Workers
    • Operatives
    • Laborers and Helpers
    • Service Workers

See the EEO-1 Job Classification Guide for in-depth descriptions of job classes.

How to Get an ID and Password for EEOC Reporting

If you're required to file Form EEO-1 but haven't reported before, you first need a company Login ID and password to access the EEOC’s website. Call the Joint Reporting Committee at 1-866-286-6440 or send an email to e1.techassistance@eeoc.gov for an ID and password. (Note: You can also contact them by these methods if you lost your login information.)

How to File the EEO-1 Report

Report the number of male and female employees within each race and job category who worked in any payroll period between July and September. You must report this information for each worksite location.

Here is a sample survey; this layout is similar to the EEOC's data entry page.
