Who must file W2/W3 electronically with the SSA?

If you have 250 or more W2 forms, you must file your W2 Copy A Forms along with Form W3 electronically with the Social Security Administration (SSA).

There are two methods for filing electronically via the SSA website:
1.  Manually enter in your information on the SSA site
2.  Upload a specific formatted file called EFW2 (formerly MMREF-1).  Here are the Social Security Administration’s Electronic Filing instructions.

Keep in mind, everyone is encouraged to use the Social Security electronic filing even if you have fewer than 250 W2 forms to submit.
Caution: If you file electronically, be sure not to file the same forms on paper.
Advantage:  If you file electronically, the deadline has been extended to March 31, 2010.
